GSPC is virtually working as “Energy Manager” of Gujarat. So far GSPC has successfully taken up the responsibilities of exploration/procurement of NG/LNG for Gujarat, development of the gas grid in Gujarat, distribution of PNG / CNG in Gujarat, setting up a Power Project or an IT project. Today, when all other states are groping in the dark, Gujarat's power situation is comfortable, for which GSPC and its group companies are responsible in a major way.

The Pipavav Power Project, conceived way back, before 1990 by the then GEB, was handed over to GPCL, and then to KRIBHCO, but it remained a dream for Saurashtra and Gujarat for over a decade.

Considering the unmatched capacity of GSPC and its group companies to handle the project right from the dream to reality, concept to commissioning supported by efficient operation and maintenance, Government of Gujarat asked GSPC to take the lead in developing the Pipavav Power Project along with Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL). Honoring the decision of the Govt. of Gujarat, GSPC has accepted the challenge and has geared up its machinery for speedy development of the project.

GSPC has incorporated a separate Special Purpose Company named ‘GSPC Pipavav Power Company Ltd.’ (GPPC) in February - 06 to implement the power project. Considering the present availability of machines, the plant capacity has been decided at approximately 700 MW, comprising of two units of approximately 350 MW each in phase-1. There are plans to add 700 MW each in the 2nd and 3rd phases, ultimately creating total capacity of approximately 2100 MW, which would make it one of the biggest power plants in Gujarat. All the clearances like MOEF, GPCB, GMB, Airport Authority Of India were obtained more than 10 years ago for 615 MW. So, GPPC is in the process of obtaining all the clearances afresh.
